A more challenging hike and one which requires some hiking experience. Take the Ruakituri Road from the “Retreat” to the end of the road. Waitangi Falls are in the Te Urewera National Park. Access to the park is via the formed paper road running through Papuni Station at the end of the road. As it is necessary to cross Papuni Station hikers should advise the station manager. Vehicles may be left at the end of the road in the area known as “The Lockwood”
The walk to Waitangi Falls takes approximately 4 hours. It is a demanding hike and so it is important to be well prepared. The Falls are a spectacular semicircular set of cascades plummeting 72 meters to the river below. There is an area for camping at the top of the falls and camping is permitted. For very experienced hikers who are well prepared hiking upstream from the falls offers an opportunity to experience true New Zealand wilderness fishing and hiking. |
